DC Restaurants and Bars: Current Favorites

I am always asked about my favorite DC restaurants. DC is an ever-expanding food city, with new eateries and bars popping up all the time. There is also such an eclectic mix of cuisines, and I love trying all the new ones. That being said, there is nothing better than going back to the oldies but goodies.

If you’re seeking a unique dining experience, this place is for you! El Cielo is a bold foray into Colombian cuisine, offering a choice of either a thirteen or twenty course meal. What sets El Cielo apart is not only the taste of the dishes but also the thoughtful presentation of each course.

Tip – I recommend the earlier seating simply because of the duration!

I am also impressed by the chic yet casual ambiance of the restaurant. Unlike many restaurants with tasting menus where the decor can feel very formal, El Cielo exudes a more relaxed and enjoyable vibe, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Hint: Prepare to get your hands dirty during the ‘chocolate’ course!

If you've spent any time in Georgetown over the past 16 years, you'll likely remember the iconic Cafe Bonaparte. Lutece, run by the same family, is a hidden gem in Georgetown. Serving French cuisine, the menu really offers something for everyone – from gnocchi to duck to caviar.

I first went for dinner and, after thoroughly enjoying it, came back for lunch. Both meals were delicious, and it doesn’t hurt that the walls and accents are all this beautiful Jardin Marjorelle blue (my favorite color!)

Tip – There is also street-side seating with a few heaters — in the summer, spring, and early fall it's wonderful to sit outside!

The definition of a hidden gem, quite literally. Sushi Nakazawa is tucked in the back of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, difficult to find as it is rather small and not inside the hotel itself. The hunt is worth it though, as they offer my favorite sushi in DC. Serving entirely omakase, Sushi Nakazawa’s cuisine is fresh, simple, and delicious.

Tip – If you find yourself still hungry at the end, you have the option to order a la carte for any of the pieces you enjoyed.

This bar from Jose Andres is an oldie but a goodie. It’s been around for years, yet still the bartenders make the most inventive cocktails – watching them work feels more like watching scientists in a lab. The menu offers over 100 drinks to choose from! While it might seem a little over-the-top at times, it is fun to pop in for a drink before heading to dinner.

Tip – They do take reservations and require a credit card at the time of booking, so make sure to plan ahead!

Found in the heart of DC, Amazonia is a Peruvian restaurant designed with a tropical vibe in mind – making its patio the ideal spot for when the weather gets warmer. I am a big fan of a pisco sour, and you can’t find a better collection of pisco anywhere else! The ceviches, plantains, and selection of Anticuchos (grilled fish, meats, or vegetables on a skewer) are all winners, too! Go for a drink before dinner or stay to enjoy the amazing cuisine.

Tip – Downstairs is Causa, by the same chef, with a tasting menu that I am looking forward to trying next!

Stay tuned for more editions of my DC Favorites, as well as new cities coming soon!
